The city of Worcester has just approved new regulations that will make it more expensive to license pit bulls and other dangerous dogs; additionally, these dogs will be required to be leashed or muzzled while off their owner’s property. I would like to add that the Worcester City Council thinks these dogs are dangerous; however, I do not. It is funny how they fail to mention other breeds they consider dangerous, only the pit bulls. How bias of them.

Detroit police shot and killed a five-year-old pit bull named Bruno. Its owner was trying to get him inside when police arrived. Police say the dog “came at” the officer so he shot it.

I knew this incident would fuel BSL fire in my state. Douglasville, GA is considering a proposal requiring pit bull owners to house only one dog per pen, but not necessarily one dog per owner, and the dogs would have to be registered and have a microchip implanted. Pit bull owners would be able to keep the ones they have, but wouldn’t be allowed to have any more, according to the discussion, and a person could be fined as much as $500 if found to be in violation. Councilman Terry Miller wanted to know if there was a constitutional issue in singling out a specific breed. Littlefield responded that its constitutionality has been tested, and there is no issue. “There are incidents of guns going off shooting people or cars hitting people, but we’re not fining them,” he said. Miller repeatedly asked for statistics that show pit bulls to be more dangerous than other dogs and questioned the potential fine of up to $1,000 per violation. The council will continue discussion next week during its 5:30 committee meetings. Mayor Pro Tem John Schildroth suggested that the council solicit input from the public before acting on it. Cheryl McAuliffe, Georgia director of the Humane Society of the United States, said the real issue is not the dogs, but irresponsible owners. Instead of a breed-specific ordinance, she favors one that targets dangerous dogs.

Former dog fighters and young owners take their pit bulls to obedience school; the dogs work toward earning their Canine Good Citizen certificate. The program aims to get young pit bull owners to show their dogs in a positive light.

A man was bitten by a French Mastiff, or Dogue De Bordeaux, while trying to protect his Beagle. This is not the first time the dog has gone after the man’s Beagle; the dog tried to attack the Beagle in April 2010 too. Where are the owner’s of this Dogue de Bordeaux?? I think it should be put down considering it bit a human. This is a gnarly bite.

Yung Joc Fined After Dogs Attack Neighbor's Dog

Yung Joc was fined in Fayette County, GA after his pit bulls attacked his neighbor’s dog.

The Atlanta-based “It’s Goin’ Down” rapper apologized to his neighbor and claims that the electronic collars and gate on his property malfunctioned.  He’s also agreed to pay for his neighbor’s dog’s medical expenses in addition to the fine.
Kudos to Yung Joc for doing the responsible thing in this situation.

A 16-year-old boy was bitten by a sheriff’s dog in Manatee County Florida. While executing a warrant for his arrest, the boy ran from police and K-9 Nitro chased him and bit him on the shoulder and side areas. He was found with a bag of marijuana in his pocket. He was taken into custody.

So here in GA, actually in my neck of the woods, a Bartow County man was arrested on dog fighting and animal cruelty charges. Ricky Lee Hurley of Acworth turned himself in Monday and he is charged with 12 counts of animal cruelty and 1 count of felony dog fighting. He had 12-chained pit bulls in his yard; the dogs were people friendly and wanted human attention. I hope these dogs will be adopted out seeing as there are not any human aggression issues that at this point. I know further evaluation will be needed to determine if they are suitable for adoption. I wish them all the best.

Two pit bull type dogs attacked a five yr old boy in Hurst, IL on August 6, 2010. He was playing at the playground with his brother at the time of the attack. The mother was able to knock the dogs off her son and grab him, while a Bush city employee who saw the attack drove the city truck toward the dogs to scare them away. A Hurst police officer soon arrived and shot both dogs, Thomas said. One dog was killed while the other ran off. That dog has since been found and euthanized. The Hurst City Council will meet Monday at seven. Chief Harvel will present an ordinance to make pit bulls & similar breeds of dangerous dogs illegal to own in Hurst. Now, I think this is unfortunate to punish thousands of pit bull owners that could live in Hurst all because of one owner’s irresponsibility. The boy is recovering quickly.

A pit bull died after it was tasered for attacking other dogs on its property and its owner could not get it under control. Derrick Peatross, 27, was charged with four counts of having an unlicensed dog and three counts of having an unvaccinated dog. Peatross is not new to having his dogs seized either. “I have seized dogs from him in the past,” she said. “He has always opted to turn the dogs over to us, rather than go to court about it.” Now, obviously this idiot is not responsible enough to own a dog of any breed. Punish him a little more seriously, I mean come on….

Spirit was rescued at a Georgia animal shelter four years ago by Ara Gureghian, a wonderful gentleman who is driving across the country on his motorcycle with a sidecar, that Spirit rides in. Tragically, Ara lost his son six years ago and has now embarked on a journey of healing and with his best friend, Spirit as his sidekick, is spreading love and a positive message about Pit Bulls to as many people as he can.

Check out both sites. Spirit’s travel page has some really cool pictures of him riding co-pilot in his person’s side car of his motorcycle. That is one BA dog!! He reminds me of Bud, the dog you accompanied Horatio Nelson Jackson across the country on the first transcontinental railroad trip. Good luck, Spirit and Ara!

3rd Pit Bull Captured Following Attack

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -- The third pit pull involved in an attack on a Douglasville woman has been captured, animal control officials said.

"The third pit bull has been quarantined. The dog was positively identified as one of the attacking dogs by Mr. Stephens, one of the neighbors who aided the victim during the attack," officials said.

Frankie Forsh, 56, said she tried to protect herself during the July 5 attack, but it wasn't enough to ward off the dogs.

“I had a stick in my hand and when they started approaching me, I hit one with the stick and then they all started jumping me,” said Forsh.

The dogs' owner, Akmad Rahim Coleman, was cited for 20 violations after his three pit bulls attacked Forsh as she walked in the neighborhood Monday morning, officials said.

Coleman was cited for improper restraint, canines attacking a human being without provocation and several counts of failing to provide adequate shelter and water.

Forsh said she fell to her knees and the dogs ripped into her face, arms, legs and feet.

“I don’t even know how many stitches I have. I don’t even know how many puncture wounds. I’m probably still in shock, it’s so surreal,” said Forsh.

Neighbors who came to her rescue were finally able to beat the dogs off of her. She was then rushed to an area hospital.

Authorities told the Forsh family that the owner of the dog's was out of town at the time of the attack, but has since returned home.

“He left his dogs in the caretaker’s charge, but he is also responsible because they are his dogs,” said Forsh.

Forsh, who may have to undergo rabies treatments, said she is hoping for stricter laws for vicious dogs.

This is a prime example of owner irresponsibility overshadowing responsible ownership. The owner of the dogs was given 20 citations, which is roughly between $5000 and $7000 in fines. I have no sympathy for the owner. He should have taken the necessary steps in finding someone responsible enough to take care of the dogs if he was going out of town. I don’t trust anyone else with my dog, which is why I rarely leave town. I hope this doesn’t start some BSL BS in Douglas County. I live about 40 minutes from there and if stuff is drudged up there, I fear I will feel the ramifications too. The victim wants stricter laws for vicious dogs; however, I think stricter laws for reckless owners would be a more apposite solution.

Now, I went back and read the article again and it doesn’t seem as though the dogs attacked the woman first. It seems they didn’t start attacking her until she hit one with a stick after they approached her.

I’m sure it was a little alarming having the dogs approach her, but I think people need more awareness about what to do when approached by a strange dog. I have encountered quite a few unleashed dogs over the years and I have never had problems with any of them. So many people unnecessarily freak out and try to run or act crazy when they encounter a strange dog, especially a pit bull; yet, those actions are usually what cause a dog to attack. I am not making excuses for the dogs’ actions in any way but I don’t think that hitting them with a stick made the circumstances any better. In fact, I bet it exacerbated it. The dogs might have just checked her out and left or wanted to be petted. The dogs should be euthanized for human aggression; however, I am going to have to disagree that the dogs attacked without provocation.
