A mixed Breed Labrador named Blue was stabbed and beaten to death while chained to his doghouse at the junkyard he called home. The junkyard had been burglarized and the cash drawer as well as $20 in change was stolen. Police discovered a white thread between Blue's teeth that may help solve the crime. The burglar made a getaway by climbing onto a parked car to jump over the junkyard fence, according to a search warrant filed Tuesday in Roanoke Circuit Court. Officers found blood and shoe prints on the vehicle, the document said. The search warrant names Otis Larry Whorley III, 26, of Roanoke, as a suspect in the burglary and in Blue's killing. No one has been charged. Whorley was treated for a dog bite at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Thursday morning, the search warrant said. He claims a pit bull attacked him while walking home from his girlfriend’s house. Blue was laid to rest in the junkyard.

In Syracuse, New York, Peggy, the pit bull mix recovering from injuries received during a four-story fall from a Syracuse apartment building, is being given up for adoption by her owner, officials said. Finding her a new home shouldn’t be any problem seeing as the hospital handling the adoption has received 100 applications; they refuse to accept anymore. The dog is doing well, but hospital officials want to give her more time to recover before letting her move into a new home where she will have to meet new people and, perhaps, new fellow pets, Wilcox said. He said an announcement about her future might come next week.

In Cyprus, a ten-year-old Paphos boy was mauled yesterday by a pedigree dog, which jumped out of the yard of a house in the village of Emba to attack the child, one of a group of youngsters playing in the street outside. Police spokesperson Nicos Tsappis told the Cyprus Mail: “The dog is a Japanese Akita, which is a pedigree breed and is two-and-a-half years of age. It attacked the boy and bit him on his face.” I just love how they choose to use the term “pedigree dog.” The 32-year-old owner of the dog, Chrystos Chrystou, was called into the local police station, where he was informed of the incident, given a caution, and released.

The pit bull that took part of three attacks inside Golden Gate Park will likely be put down. Nobody has claimed him or the female dog said to have been with the male dog during the attacls. In all likelihood, the pit bull will be euthanized after Sunday, a police official with the department’s vicious and dangerous animals unit said.
A pit bull mixed breed was destroyed by county authorities after it attacked a small Yorkshire terrier just before the Fourth of July parade Sunday in Sheridan. The owners relinquished their rights because they felt the dog was a danger. Seemingly, the dog was tied to an outside restraint. Owner irresponsibility played a big role in this incident for having the dog restrained outside without a fence; additionally, they were careless in that the dog was outside unsupervised. If one lives near a parade route he or she should have taken the necessary steps in making sure their dog was inside or unable to get loose, especially after attacking another dog previously. I’d also like to know what exactly said dog is mixed with since they are so sure it is a pit bull mix.

A 10-year-old boy playing with a friend in the back yard of an Orange County home was attacked by a pit bull, which was shot and killed by a deputy. The child wasn't hurt badly but the dog was killed because it supposedly acted aggressively while waiting for AC to arrive. The dog was 10 years old but the owner only had him for 6 months. Pit bull bites are the only ones who make the headlines. The only reason THIS one made the news is because the word "pit bull" makes people click on the link. If you look at real statistics, you'll see reality and that is ANY dog of ANY breed can and will bite. THEY ARE DOGS. Owners' responsibility, end of story.

Pitt bulls are only owned by two types of people, first there are the Michael Vick ones that think it's cool to raise the biggest, baddest, meanest dog and fight it for money or kicks. Then there are the ones who have very little self-esteem so they make up for it by looking cool or bad walking down the street with one. Breeding should be outlawed on Pits and all the others rounded up and destroyed. I had a 16-week-old female black lab that was just lying in my front yard chewing a rawhide ten feet from me while I was washing my car when a brindle pit came out of nowhere and attacked her. It picked her up and shook her and broke her neck in seconds, she didn't even see it coming! I had no chance of saving her, and the worst part is my 8-year-old daughter saw her Christmas present and future lifelong companion killed in front of her. I was able to get my 45 out and shoot the pit before it got away, I shot it until I ran out of rounds and if I had another magazine I would have put those into it also. If it's owner was there I probably would done the same to them but instead I was able to sue them and get enough that they'll remember for the rest of their lives what a bad decision they made in owning one of these dogs. I have known multiple people that have had serious issues with this breed and it has never ended up in the dog or owners favor. If another one comes around loose I won't wait for it to attack a pet or family member, it will be shot in seconds no questions asked! If it has an upset owner threatening to haunt me about the dead pit then bring it on! Their lives will change quickly also! I promise!
A committee formed in Shadyside, OH to work on banning vicious and dangerous dogs. People in the community of Shadyside have formed a committee to ban pit bulls in the village. The group has met with village council several times to draft legislation against the animals and have also petitioned over 600 residents. Some Shadyside Village Council members agree that the record of calls to police about dogs at one home was enough to consider the animals a public nuisance. Council will discuss the matter further when they meet again on July 9. __________________________________________ City officials in Marshfield, WI might create an ordinance banning pit bulls after last week’s attack on a 5-year-old girl by a Rottweiler-pit bull mixed-breed dog. Her father, a 33-year-old Spencer man, and the caretaker of the dog, a 21-year-old Marshfield woman, also were injured in the attack. They were treated and released June 29. I’d like to know how banning pit bulls would have helped or could possibly help in the future someone who is attacked by a “Rottweiler-pit bull mixed-breed dog?” The above dog is MUTT thus a ban on ALLMUTTS would have to take effect in order to prevent attacks from MUTT dogs, which would have a lot of people VERY angry. If passed, the Bill will introduce major changes to current dangerous dog legislation, which is widely considered one of the most ineffective pieces of government legislation ever brought into force. More emphasis on the owner’s responsibilities – the Bill supports the principle that it is the owner who has the potential to make a dog either well behaved or badly behaved. It gives authorized officers the powers to place Dog Control Notices on irresponsible owners at the first signs of dog aggression.
Attacks, which take place on private property, would also become a criminal offence – a large number of dog attack incidents occur within the home and on private property. The Bill includes various exemptions such as being attacked by another animal, provocation, and attacks on individuals committing an offence for which they could be imprisoned.
Legislation will no longer be breed specific – since the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, public money and resources have been wasted by already overstretched police authorities seizing dogs simply for being of a particular breed or type. Research now overwhelmingly supports the principle of ‘deed not breed’, and proves that genetics (breed) play only a limited part in the temperament of an individual dog, with environment and training having a far greater effect.
Dog survives being thrown from fourth floor of Syracuse building

Syracuse, NY -- A dog was thrown out a fourth-floor window on Syracuse’s Eastside this morning and police are trying to find the person responsible.
About 7:30 a.m., construction workers saw the dog get thrown from a window at 1809 E. Fayette St., Sgt. Tom Connellan said. The dog, a pit bull mix about 1 year old, suffered multiple injuries when it landed, including two broken back legs, broken ribs and internal injuries, Connellan said. When police arrived at the apartment the dog was thrown from, there was no one there, Connellan said. Connellan was unsure if the dog had tags. Police have some leads on who might have thrown the dog and the investigation is continuing. The dog was originally taken to a Bridge Street veterinarian but was transferred to the DeWitt Animal Hospital. A woman who answered the phones at DeWitt Animal Hospital said she was instructed by police not to give out any information.
Ricky Coleman, 20, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and criminal trespass in connection with the incident, Sgt. Tom Connellan said. “This was the result of a domestic dispute, he and his girlfriend, and he ended up throwing her dog out the fourth-floor window,” Connellan said.
The incident was witnessed about 7:30 a.m. Friday by construction workers.
Coleman was charged later that day and arraigned by City Judge James Cecile, who set bail and ordered Coleman held at the Justice Center Jail on $10,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing Wednesday, jail officials said. He remained in custody as of noon today, they said.

A hospital official said the dog, dubbed “Peggy” by staff, needs surgery on broken front and back legs by a board certified veterinary orthopedist to avoid needing to amputate the rear leg. DeWitt, NY – Less than 24 hours after an appeal went out to help her, an abused pit bull mix dubbed “Peggy” has the money she needs for surgery to repair her broken rear leg.
Officials of DeWitt Animal Hospital, which received Peggy on Friday after she was thrown from the fourth floor of a Syracuse apartment building, called The Post-Standard at 8:30 a.m. to say they had reached their goal of raising $3,000 for the surgery and are no longer taking donations on Peggy’s behalf. Anyone who still wishes to donate can contribute toward the upkeep of strays in the hospital’s care, officials said.
Syracuse police announced about noon Monday that they had charged Ricky Coleman, 20, with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and criminal trespass after he allegedly argued with his girlfriend and dropped her dog from a window at an apartment building at 1809 E. Fayette St.
At the same time, DeWitt Animal Hospital officials disclosed that Peggy needed surgery by a veterinary orthopedic specialist and could lose the leg if she did not get it. The disclosure unleashed donations from “many, many people,” a hospital official said. The operation is scheduled for Wednesday.

The dog, whose plight tugged the heartstrings and purse strings of Central New Yorkers, is recovering at the clinic of the surgeon who performed the operation, said Stephanie Ingram, a receptionist at DeWitt Animal Hospital. Officials of the hospital, which has been caring for Peggy since Friday, are withholding the name and location of the surgeon at the surgeon’s request.
Syracuse police say Peggy was thrown from a fourth-floor window of an East Fayette Street apartment building by a man who had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, the dog’s owner. On Monday, police announced they had charged Ricky Coleman, 20, with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and criminal trespass.
Officials at the animal hospital said the same day that the dog, which they dubbed Peggy, would need an operation costing $3,000 to avoid losing her damaged hind leg. Some $5,000 in donations has poured in, Ingram said this morning.
