A mixed Breed Labrador named Blue was stabbed and beaten to death while chained to his doghouse at the junkyard he called home. The junkyard had been burglarized and the cash drawer as well as $20 in change was stolen. Police discovered a white thread between Blue's teeth that may help solve the crime. The burglar made a getaway by climbing onto a parked car to jump over the junkyard fence, according to a search warrant filed Tuesday in Roanoke Circuit Court. Officers found blood and shoe prints on the vehicle, the document said. The search warrant names Otis Larry Whorley III, 26, of Roanoke, as a suspect in the burglary and in Blue's killing. No one has been charged. Whorley was treated for a dog bite at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Thursday morning, the search warrant said. He claims a pit bull attacked him while walking home from his girlfriend’s house. Blue was laid to rest in the junkyard.

In Syracuse, New York, Peggy, the pit bull mix recovering from injuries received during a four-story fall from a Syracuse apartment building, is being given up for adoption by her owner, officials said. Finding her a new home shouldn’t be any problem seeing as the hospital handling the adoption has received 100 applications; they refuse to accept anymore. The dog is doing well, but hospital officials want to give her more time to recover before letting her move into a new home where she will have to meet new people and, perhaps, new fellow pets, Wilcox said. He said an announcement about her future might come next week.

In Cyprus, a ten-year-old Paphos boy was mauled yesterday by a pedigree dog, which jumped out of the yard of a house in the village of Emba to attack the child, one of a group of youngsters playing in the street outside. Police spokesperson Nicos Tsappis told the Cyprus Mail: “The dog is a Japanese Akita, which is a pedigree breed and is two-and-a-half years of age. It attacked the boy and bit him on his face.” I just love how they choose to use the term “pedigree dog.” The 32-year-old owner of the dog, Chrystos Chrystou, was called into the local police station, where he was informed of the incident, given a caution, and released.

The pit bull that took part of three attacks inside Golden Gate Park will likely be put down. Nobody has claimed him or the female dog said to have been with the male dog during the attacls. In all likelihood, the pit bull will be euthanized after Sunday, a police official with the department’s vicious and dangerous animals unit said.

A pit bull mixed breed was destroyed by county authorities after it attacked a small Yorkshire terrier just before the Fourth of July parade Sunday in Sheridan. The owners relinquished their rights because they felt the dog was a danger. Seemingly, the dog was tied to an outside restraint. Owner irresponsibility played a  big role in this incident for having the dog restrained outside without a fence; additionally, they were careless in that the dog was outside unsupervised. If one lives near a parade route he or she should have taken the necessary steps in making sure their dog was inside or unable to get loose, especially after attacking another dog previously. I’d also like to know what exactly said dog is mixed with since they are so sure it is a pit bull mix.

A 10-year-old boy playing with a friend in the back yard of an Orange County home was attacked by a pit bull, which was shot and killed by a deputy. The child wasn't hurt badly but the dog was killed because it supposedly acted aggressively while waiting for AC to arrive. The dog was 10 years old but the owner only had him for 6 months. According to comments, the dog was a rescue dog and his death was unnecessary. Here  are some reader comments:

I know the person who owned him all this is BSSS first of all the dog didnt attack the child the kids were playing with it and provoked it!! second of all the cop was a a little power hungry short man who was scared of the dog and wanted to finallyyyy use his gun. The cop was scared of dogs so he killed it thats all. The dog is not a mean dog he is playful and was just probably approaching the cop. NOT AGGRESSIVLY. The dog was rescued by my friend thats why he was old and only had him for that time. The victim here is the dog. The boys dad was a little baby and not man enough himself to deal with the situation. Pit bull bites are the only ones who make the headlines. Ask for a report of the Orange County Animal Control bite stats for THIS ONE WEEK, and you'll see 13 other breeds responsible for biting (as bad if not worse as this case). The only reason THIS one made the news is because the word "pit bull" makes people click on the link. If you look at real statistics, you'll see reality and that is ANY dog of ANY breed can and will bite. THEY ARE DOGS. Owners' responsibility, end of story.

And my favorite… this one takes the cake

Pitt bulls are only owned by two types of people, first there are the Michael Vick ones that think it's cool to raise the biggest, baddest, meanest dog and fight it for money or kicks. Then there are the ones who have very little self-esteem so they make up for it by looking cool or bad walking down the street with one. Breeding should be outlawed on Pits and all the others rounded up and destroyed. I had a 16-week-old female black lab that was just lying in my front yard chewing a rawhide ten feet from me while I was washing my car when a brindle pit came out of nowhere and attacked her. It picked her up and shook her and broke her neck in seconds, she didn't even see it coming! I had no chance of saving her, and the worst part is my 8-year-old daughter saw her Christmas present and future lifelong companion killed in front of her. I was able to get my 45 out and shoot the pit before it got away, I shot it until I ran out of rounds and if I had another magazine I would have put those into it also. If it's owner was there I probably would done the same to them but instead I was able to sue them and get enough that they'll remember for the rest of their lives what a bad decision they made in owning one of these dogs. I have known multiple people that have had serious issues with this breed and it has never ended up in the dog or owners favor. If another one comes around loose I won't wait for it to attack a pet or family member, it will be shot in seconds no questions asked! If it has an upset owner threatening to haunt me about the dead pit then bring it on! Their lives will change quickly also! I promise!

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -- The third pit pull involved in an attack on a Douglasville woman has been captured, animal control officials said.

"The third pit bull has been quarantined. The dog was positively identified as one of the attacking dogs by Mr. Stephens, one of the neighbors who aided the victim during the attack," officials said.

Frankie Forsh, 56, said she tried to protect herself during the July 5 attack, but it wasn't enough to ward off the dogs.

“I had a stick in my hand and when they started approaching me, I hit one with the stick and then they all started jumping me,” said Forsh.

The dogs' owner, Akmad Rahim Coleman, was cited for 20 violations after his three pit bulls attacked Forsh as she walked in the neighborhood Monday morning, officials said.

Coleman was cited for improper restraint, canines attacking a human being without provocation and several counts of failing to provide adequate shelter and water.

Forsh said she fell to her knees and the dogs ripped into her face, arms, legs and feet.

“I don’t even know how many stitches I have. I don’t even know how many puncture wounds. I’m probably still in shock, it’s so surreal,” said Forsh.

Neighbors who came to her rescue were finally able to beat the dogs off of her. She was then rushed to an area hospital.

Authorities told the Forsh family that the owner of the dog's was out of town at the time of the attack, but has since returned home.

“He left his dogs in the caretaker’s charge, but he is also responsible because they are his dogs,” said Forsh.

Forsh, who may have to undergo rabies treatments, said she is hoping for stricter laws for vicious dogs.

This is a prime example of owner irresponsibility overshadowing responsible ownership. The owner of the dogs was given 20 citations, which is roughly between $5000 and $7000 in fines. I have no sympathy for the owner. He should have taken the necessary steps in finding someone responsible enough to take care of the dogs if he was going out of town. I don’t trust anyone else with my dog, which is why I rarely leave town. I hope this doesn’t start some BSL BS in Douglas County. I live about 40 minutes from there and if stuff is drudged up there, I fear I will feel the ramifications too. The victim wants stricter laws for vicious dogs; however, I think stricter laws for reckless owners would be a more apposite solution.

Now, I went back and read the article again and it doesn’t seem as though the dogs attacked the woman first. It seems they didn’t start attacking her until she hit one with a stick after they approached her.

I’m sure it was a little alarming having the dogs approach her, but I think people need more awareness about what to do when approached by a strange dog. I have encountered quite a few unleashed dogs over the years and I have never had problems with any of them. So many people unnecessarily freak out and try to run or act crazy when they encounter a strange dog, especially a pit bull; yet, those actions are usually what cause a dog to attack. I am not making excuses for the dogs’ actions in any way but I don’t think that hitting them with a stick made the circumstances any better. In fact, I bet it exacerbated it. The dogs might have just checked her out and left or wanted to be petted. The dogs should be euthanized for human aggression; however, I am going to have to disagree that the dogs attacked without provocation.

Aurora police dog bites wrong man

AURORA — Aurora police have removed a K9 dog from duty after the animal bit the wrong person during a foot pursuit, a police spokesman told 9News. The incident happened Saturday about 4:30 p.m. near Boston Street and East Colfax Avenue, police Detective Bob Friel said.
Police had surrounded a room at the Carriage Motor Inn to arrest Reginald Hawthorne, 21, on a warrant for sexual assault, Friel told the television station.
When Hawthorne ran from the motel, police sent a K9 dog after him, 9News said, but the dog bit Juan Ramirez as he worked outside his taco stand a block from the motel.
Ramirez is recovering from bite and scratch injuries, 9News said. Police are conducting a review.

Well, that sucks for the man who was bitten; however, how is the dog supposed to differentiate between the sexual assaulter and the taco stand dude?

Alleged Animal Abuse
In Memphis, TN, a man is behind bars for picking up his dog, said to be a pit bull, and throwing it seven feet away from him after he was ticketed for allowing the animal to run loose. He then did it again, all in front of the police who ticketed him. Hence, this idiot abused his dog because he is an careless and negligent owner. I hope they do not return the dog to him because he will probably do a lot worse next time. Let’s hope AC doesn’t drop the ball either and euthanize it for being a pit bull. Find the dog a good forever home.

Elgin mayor taught these pits, but not owner, some manners

Californians, you can keep your Terminator because we have the Schockinator.
That's right. You may have Ah-nuld the governor, but we have Ed the mayor. Elgin's motto really ought to be "Our mayor kicks ass!" However, I have to say my previous motto suggestion, "You might want to watch out for the pit bulls," is looking better and better.
You see, the mayor was walking Rako, his 2-year-old German shepherd, by a house in the 200 block of Plum Street at 9:30 p.m. June 24 when two pit bulls took exception. Little did they know they messed with the wrong man.
One of the pits began circling the pair, and when it lunged, Schock kicked it, sending the bewildered beast scurrying for cover. Before the second pit bull realized the error of his ways, Ed whacked it with a spare leash, dispatching it, too. Neither the mayor nor Rako sustained any injuries.
In a previous column, I described routing a Doberman, a Rottweiler and a German shepherd, but in my three pit bull confrontations, the best I could do was stand my ground. Schock credits Rako's even temperament for keeping the situation within the bounds of reason. But if it's all the same to you, I'll never write anything negative about Elgin again because I'm terrified of getting on the mayor's bad side.
And speaking of even dispositions, with the pit bulls on the run, Schock was willing to let the whole thing go, but that all changed when a teenage girl descended from the porch to retrieve the fleeing dogs. Schock explained, "I realized she was just a kid and these things happen, but when I tried to give her a bit of lecture on responsible pet ownership, she dropped the F-bomb on me for kicking her dog."
So Schock told her, "If you're going to be a smart-ass about it, I'm going to call the cops." Having learned nothing from the fate of her dogs, the insolent brat retorted, "Call the police. I don't care," so Schock dialed 911. This exchange is yet further proof of my long-held theorem that teenagers should be rarely seen and never heard.
As it turns out, our impertinent pet owner made an exceptionally bad choice, because she ended up with five citations -- two for no dog collars or rabies tags, one for loose dogs, one for the attack and yet another for having dangerous dogs. Those fines could hit $4,000 under the stricter Elgin dog ordinance passed last March. I don't think she's going to be getting her allowance any time soon.
Of course, the teenager disputes the mayor's version of events, claiming her perfect pit bulls were the modicum of politeness and personality. That still doesn't explain the lack of collars, leashes or rabies tags.
Despite my newfound fear of getting whacked with a leash, I dared to ask the mayor if this wasn't a message from God. After all, having now faced down two of these heinous creatures, shouldn't Elgin reconsider its failed pit bull ban?
"I think the current ordinance is a better answer," Schock responded. "We have to let that ordinance work. If you're an irresponsible dog owner, it's going to cost you a lot of money. Those dog owners might want to reconsider dog ownership. Word is going to get around on this one." (Schock's always been a master of understatement.)
Considering Elgin police had to shoot two charging pit bulls over the Memorial Day weekend, and on June 29 a pit bull mix plowed through a locked screen door to bite an Elgin postal worker, it's a good thing Schock's the mayor and I'm not. I wouldn't be nearly so magnanimous.
Because we agree the real problem is almost always the pet owner, this re-emphasizes a query I've posed before. "What kind of person would want to own a pit bull?" I'll tell you. In general, it's someone with low self-esteem who sees a powerful, domination-determined animal as an extension of themselves. It's someone who, after their pit bull attacks you, has the nerve to hit you with the F-bomb for kicking their dog. Although I love Schock's ordinance optimism, even the threat of a multi-thousand-dollar fine will not deter that kind of thinking.
But, to quote a famous movie, "Dangerous dog ordinance? We don't need no stinking dangerous dog ordinance!" If you're nervous about walking little Fifi down Elgin's streets, simply call upon the Schockinator. Legend has it he can send a pack of pit bulls into full flight with a mere glance. I'm thinkin' Harrison Ford plays the mayor.

I hope this teenage owner of these dogs is fined a lot of money. Stiffer penalties for irresponsible dog owners! There is no good excuse for her dogs not to have been a leash or off her property. Then to top it off she cusses the mayor for kicking her dog, which had just attacked him. Give me a break little girl. You get what you get you little dumbass. Excuse my language but that pisses me off that the mayor/victim was going to let bygones be bygones but she had to run off at the mouth. Idiot…

As for the comments regarding the author’s question about who would want to own a pit bull, he needs to rethink that statement as it does nothing for him except to show everyone how ignorant he really is.

PLUMSTEAD: Bravery award for dog hurt saving owner in machete attack

A BRAVE dog has been awarded the animal equivalent of the George Cross after protecting its owner from a gang wielding machetes.
Staffordshire bull terrier Oi was posthumously honoured with the highest award for civilian animal bravery, the PDSA Gold Medal.
The 15-year-old pet leapt into action when a gang armed with machetes forced their way into her family’s home in July 2008.
Owner Patricia Adshead, of Maxey Road, Plumstead, was making a cup of tea when three men wearing balaclavas broke into her home.
Her ex-husband came running downstairs to help.
Ms Adshead said: “He kicked one of them down the stairs but another severed his hand. It was hanging by a thread.”
The 62-year-old added: “I was trapped in the kitchen with Oi and one of the men. He raised the machete over my head.
“Oi jumped up and bit his hand. He brought the machete down on her head but she still chased him out of the house.
“If she hadn’t gone for him I would have been dead. She saved my life.”
Oi was rushed to the Thamesmead PDSA PetAid hospital, The Freda Powell Centre, in Eynsham Drive.
The mother of four said: “The PDSA saved her life. They did a fantastic job and gave her another two years.
“I only wish Oi could have lived long enough to accept her medal.”
Oi died from cancer in March.
The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals charity gives free health care to animals owned by people on low incomes.

This Staffie was a true hero and model canine rep for pit bull dogs. She lived up to her name as a loyal companion and put her own life at risk to help her beloved owner. What is truly amazing is that she survived the attack and lived another two years before succumbing to cancer. What an awesome baby dogs!! Congrats, Oi!!

Family says dog tried to pull baby out of burning home

BRISTOL — The Elkhart County Red Cross is calling a Bristol pit bull a hero after he alerted his family to a fire, and even tried to pull a 3-month-old baby girl away from the danger.

The fire started around 3 a.m. Thursday in a hallway and quickly spread throughout the home.

“It sounds like the real hero here is the family pit bull,” said Frank Connolly, assistant executive director of the Elkhart County Red Cross. “Apparently ‘Thor’ woke the family up and even tried to pull the baby and bassinet out of the house. Lately we have learned how important pets can be to a family, and this is as stark an example as I’ve ever seen.”

The family says Thor barked and jumped on them until they woke up. Then he grabbed the baby's bassinet and dragged it to the front door.

"He's the hero today. He's the man," said Kemper Hunter, Thor's owner. "We turned around to look for the bassinet that was at the head of the bed, and it's at the door. All we got to do is open the door and go out. [Thor's] like 'Let's roll, dad! It's time to go, I got you.'"

No one in the family was injured, but their home was heavily damaged. The Red Cross is providing short-term housing as well as food, blankets, clothing and a crib for the baby.

What an awesome baby dogs! He is a true model canine for all pit bull type dogs and a true hero to his family. Nice work, Thor! Funny, though, how the term “pit bull” escaped the title. Now, if this was a negative story you know the font would be bolded, underlined, and all caps shouting PIT BULL. How irritating.

PIT BULL IN DESPERATE NEED OF THE POWER OF THE PAW

A blog I recently received in my Google alerts caught my eye and I was horrified by what I saw. A pit bull was found in a mall parking lot and had been horridly abused. She lost her left eye, covered in sores and wounds, and was hairless. Her teeth had also been filed down or extracted it was later discovered. 

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share this story with everyone and anyone you know. Share it on your blog, Facebook, MySpace, Email, or any other social networking tool you use. This dog is in desperate need of care and two women named Sarah and Sandra have become her angels. No animal should ever have to go through what this sweet girl has endured.

Sandra and Sarah say she is so gentle and sweet. If all you do is share her story you will be doing this sweetheart a great service.  Her name is Shelby and she has been given a second chance... Mommy is doing this post at the request of The Houston Pettie Pack's Mom Sandra. Their computer is still down, but Mommy and Sandra have kept in contact with each other by phone. This afternoon, Sandra called me very upset. She found a female pit bull in the parking lot of a mall very badly hurt. It appears she as been in a fight and dumped there, probably by whoever was fighting her. She has hardly any hair and many puncture wounds and bites. Sandra is afraid she has lost an eye. Does the name Michael Vick, the monster, come to mind? 

Their are 4 pits in Kissa Bulls pack plus 2 dachshunds and we all know the kind of people they have for their parents. Kindness, loving, compassionate are just a few words to describe them. Sandra does not want to call the pound or SPCA, for obvious reasons. We know their are rescue groups but for now Sandra is trying to save her, since she has a lot of knowledge and experience with pits and a lot of medicine on hand is going to try.

 

 

If anyone knows anybody that could help take care of this poor girl it would be greatly appreciated. Of course she will need lots of prayers and THE POWER OF THE PAW to survive.

Please spread the word around the blogging world about this poor little one. Maybe their are some other pit bull bloggers in the Houston area that could help us take care of her.

UPDATE--INJURED PIT BULL

I want to thank everybody for the prayers and concern for the injured pit that Sandra found Saturday. I went there this morning and her injuries are far worse than the pictures showed.

Sandra's Vet is closed today because of the extended holiday. I called my Vet and I made an appointment, 4 pm was all he had open. Neither of us gets paid until this Friday but this can't wait so I will pay for her treatment with one of my credit cards.

We both think she was used as bait to train fighting bull dogs, has had pups at some time, appears to have been burned and one eye is sunken in. She is able walk, very gentle and we think she knows finally someone is trying to help her. God only knows all the pain and torture this poor girl has been through.

Sandra has done a marvelous job caring for Shelby. Yes her, name is Shelby.
I asked Sandra, what she wanted to call her, since my doctor needed a name. She didn't have one in mind so I named her Shelby.

I will do a post after we come from then Vet.

Please keep the Power of the Paw going because Shelby will need a miracle.

UPDATE ON SHELBY'S VET VISIT

Sandra & I took Shelby to Mona's Vet this afternoon. There was some good news but lots of bad news. First off she got a complete physical and I had Dr Briles give her all the shots that any other dog would be given at a yearly exam.
The good news is that the fecal exam was negative and he doesn't think she has mange based on what he saw when he did the skin scraping test but Sandra bathed her with medicated shampoo a couple of times and the mites might have been washed away so he will recheck again in two weeks. He doesn't think she was burned but the reason she looks so bad is because of bacteria and the hundred of bites & puncture wounds. He gave Sandra an antibiotic to give her twice a day for two weeks, called Baytril and a dip to give her today and another dip in a week, called Mitaban. That should help with the itching. He said he has seen dogs in worst shape than Shelby do really well with antibiotics. "My God! How could this sweet baby look any worse."
As we were getting Shelby out of my SUV, we discovered something we hadn't noticed before. Most of her teeth had either been pulled or sawed down. The doctor agrees with us.....you don't take the teeth out of a fighting dog but you do, if you plan on using the dog as bait. We can't prove it but we all feel that she was bred continuously until she wasn't useful anymore and then used as bait.
She is heart worm positive and will need to be treated for that. One of her eyes is useless and will either have to be removed or stitched shut. She will need to be spayed. There is a possibility she could be pregnant but we pray not. When she goes back, he will do bloodwork, etc.
For now he doesn't want to give her any steroid treatments until we see what happens with the antibiotics, the dips, complete bed rest and isolation from all the other dogs. He did give her a shot for pain today. On July 17, we take her back and he will redo the skin scarping to verify there is no mange & decide what happens next.
He said it is to dangerous to start her on heart worm treatment until we are sure she doesn't have mange. When the time is right we will have her spayed and the heartworm treatments started.
Sandra took Shelby home to care for her and she is in the best of hands, far better than mine.
I paid 251.00 for Shelby's visit & medications today. Dr Briles reduced her bill from 284.50 to 251.00. "God Bless him. He is a big believer in rescue and gives reduced rates to anybody helping rescue a dog, cat, etc....it doesn't matter what."
I hope that I have remembered everything but sometimes, when I get so upset, I tend to forget details. There were a lot of tears shed today but when Dr Briles said he thinks she could be saved our hearts leaped for joy.

Before I close, I would like to share one thing. When I first posted about Shelby, I posted a picture, as I usually do, of an unknown flower with a lizard on it that Judy had sent me from her yard. I thought it was just a bunch of rather common berries but since Judy sent it why not use it. This morning, when I saw Shelby in the flesh for the first time I was horrified. I cried and thought to myself, the doctor won't be able to help her and she would have to be put down. When I came home for a few hours before her appointment, I found the picture at the top of this blog that Judy sent this morning. The same flower but with a beautiful bloom. Shelby will be like that, of that I am sure, given time and with the Power of the Paw on her side. If we do lose her, we will have tried.

SHELBY'S FUND AND PLEASE LORD, NO MORE RAIN

Good morning,

I am doing a very fast post before I leave for work, if I can get out of the driveway hat is, to thank everyone for the out poring of love and support for Shelby. I will be seeing Shelby again on Saturday and will have an update on how she is doing and hopefully take some picture where she is looking better. Sandra said yesterday that Shelby is so sweet and gives her no trouble at all but she doesn't want to be alone, so Sandra has made a bed that she can sleep on next to Shelby's cage.

Several of you have suggested we setup a Pay Pal account for donations to what I have started calling "The Shelby Fund." I will talk to Sandra about doing that on Saturday and will let you know. Again thanks so much for helping support our girl and keep the prayers coming...........Sarah, Mona's Mom
