From My Google Alerts- Spetember 16, 2010

A deputy serving a felony arrest warrant was attacked  by two pit bulls; he shot both of them, killing one of the dogs. Officials said Orange County Sheriff's Office Gang Unit agents were serving a felony warrant at a home on 6th Street in Bithlo at about 4 p.m. when the dogs attacked.

The West Valley City Animal Shelter is offering owners of pit bull terriers or pit mixes a free spay or neuter service in October. Shelter manager Karen Bird says they are focusing on pit bulls because of the area’s large population of the breed. The West Valley shelter will provide 100 free sterilizations for pit bulls and mixes October 11 through 16. Interested dog owners must register in person at the shelter prior to those dates. The West Valley Animal Shelter is located at 4522 West 3500 south and is open Monday through Friday 10 am to 6 pm. The phone number is (801) 365-5800. This is great; don’'’’t get me wrong, but why not do this for every dog to cut down on the stray population in general? Oh, and KCPW, I was wondering, was that picture of a snarling pit bull really necessary?

In Jonesboro, Arkansas, a Chihuahua was attacked and killed by a pit bull and as a result, it will be euthanized. Such ridiculousness; I cannot stand when a dog is put down for dog aggression. Even another resident thinks that euthanizing the dog is unnecessary. Ginger Dunavant thinks it's an unfortunate situation for both dog owners, but she adds euthanizing the Pit Bull is a little severe. She adds, "I feel for the owner of the Pit Bull, I feel for the Pit Bull, because he probably doesn't realize what he did.”””’’’’’’" Here is an idea: PUNISH THE IRRESPONSIBLE OWNER!

Danish dog breed law takes first innocent victim - a Boerboel

Pet News 101: Danish dog breed law takes first innocent victim - a Boerboel

July 2, 2:25 PM · Libbii Armstrong-Brown - Salt Lake City Pet Products Examiner
Commencing on 1 July 2010, new breed ban laws were set in place in Denmark. Denmark's new Dog Act bans the following 13 breeds, although dogs said to be pit bull terriers and Tosas were banned in 1991:
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Central Asian Ovtcharka
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Caucasian Ovtcharka
  • Sarplaninac
  • South Russian Ovtcharka
  • Tornjak
  • Tosa (banned in 1991)
  • American Bulldog
  • Boerboel - South African Mastiff
  • Kangal
  • Pit bull terrier (banned in 1991)

Under Denmark's law, these dog breeds, as well as dogs that contain the genes of these breeds, are prohibited from being bred, purchased, sold, imported, exported or transferred in Denmark, though there is a long phase in period for breeders, up to June 30, 2015.

Those dogs that are banned dogs in Denmark as of July 1, 2010 may only stay during a phase-in period. However, they have to be kept on a short leash less than 7 feet long, and wear a closed muzzle when off their owner's property.

Interestingly, it lies on the owners to prove to authorities, upon request, that their dog is not one of the banned breeds or even a mix.
Anasha Boerboels, one of Denmark's most prestigious Boerboel breeding kennel, was forced to euthanize the first Boerboel victim of Denmark's cruel breed ban. The reason? Because she was a spayed female for which a home couldn't be found in time.
One of the owners of Anasha Boerboels made the following statement:
"The first Boerboel has to be put to sleep today because of the new dog laws that came into effect yesterday. In about an hour we will take her to the vets and she will be euthanized. She is neutered and therefore cannot be used for breeding, therefore she would have to be placed as a pet. This is now illegal in Denmark and therefore she has to pay the price.

We are a professional kennel, we have vet inspections and the vet noted that she was here. We are not allowed to own pet dogs, only breeding dogs. This is a rule that the tax authorities have enforced so that kennels have to account for all the dog food etc used in their kennel business."
'Denmark is moving in the opposite direction from other European Union countries that have discovered breed discrimination does not work to prevent or reduce dog bite incidents.
In fact, UK's Dangerous Dogs Act was declared a failure in 2007 when it was found that the numbers of dog bites had risen 10% in a year and 50% since 1998-1999. According to the BBC, hospitalizations due to dog bites increased by 25% after 'pit bulls' were banned in Britain.
It was also determined that the Act did not result in any decline in dog bite incidents with 73.9% before and 73.1% after enactment of the law.'
Breed ban laws have considerable, long term effects, as outlined in this article.
Last year Ogden proposed regulations against pit bulls; the same time that Orem was considering banning pit bulls; Springville has had regulations against the breed for years; South Jordan has banned them altogether, including Staffordshire Terriers.

But pit bulls are not the only dog breed being banned.
Did you know that North Salt Lake has banned Shar-Peis and Rottweilers?
Or that Smithfield has stated the following: Declared as vicious and require a special permit; Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Pit Bull, Husky, Alaskan malamute, Doberman Pinscher, and Wolf Hybird?

This article particularly saddened me because there was NO GOOD reason for this female dog to be euthanized, other than to satisfy a ridiculous law. She wasn’t aggressive and had no history of hurting anyone. She was spayed, which was her death sentence.
BSL is BS!

Pit bull recovering after being shot by Ridgefield Park cop during dog mauling incident

RIDGEFIELD PARK – A patrol officer responding to a dog mauling on Friday shot a pit bull when it lunged at him, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
_______________
The pit bull was one of four owned by the person who called the police about the mauling. The one that was attacked died and the one that the police shot survived; the other two were taken to an animal shelter. While it didn’t sate the sexes of the dogs, I wonder if they were males and unneutered.

Official: N. Arizona deputy forced to shoot and kill aggressive pit bull

FLAGSTAFF, AZ - Authorities say a sheriff's deputy was forced to shoot and kill a dog behaving aggressively in a Flagstaff-area neighborhood on Wednesday.
According to a Coconino Sheriff's Office news release, around 8:40 a.m. a woman reported she was being attacked by a vicious dog as she was standing in the street in a Doney Park neighborhood.
The victim told deputies she was walking with her 3-year-old child in a stroller and her dog on a leash when a dog described as a pit bull ran out of a yard and approached her and the child in an aggressive manner.
The dog reportedly lunged at the stroller, biting it and locking its jaws on it. The woman said she struck the dog with a metal rod she was carrying and eventually the dog released its grip and ran back to the porch of the residence.
The deputy tried to contact the dog's owner at the residence, but according to the report, he was not able to enter the yard due to the dog's aggressive behavior. At one point the deputy reportedly had to run back to his vehicle for protection.
When contacted at work, the dog's owner told the deputy she would not be able to return home until 3 p.m.
An animal management officer was called to tranquilize the dog.
According to the report, several neighbors familiar with the dog arrived and the dog left the yard again and aggressively ran at the neighbors who were standing in the roadway.
The deputy reportedly placed himself between the dog and two bystanders and the dog continued to charge the deputy.
At that point, officials say, the deputy was forced to shoot and kill the advancing animal.
______________
First, the article says, “a dog described as a pit bull.” I would like to know what their description of a pit bull is.
As for the owner, she is an idiot; if she was at work that dog should not have been in the yard alone. This happened at 8:40am and the owner said she couldn’t be there until 3pm. She obviously didn’t give a shit about her dog or anyone else for that matter.

Supervisors seek pit bull spay/neuter ordinance

Published: Thursday, June 17, 2010 7:52 PM CDT
An ordinance requiring all pit bull and pit bull-type dogs in the unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County to be spayed or neutered will be considered by the Board of Supervisors on June 22.

“The public is clearly concerned about the overpopulation of pit bull-type dogs in our county. This ordinance will control the pit bull population and keep the county from having to house and eventually destroy so many of these dogs,” said First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt, who worked with the county’s Animal Care & Control Division to create the proposed ordinance.

The ordinance would require all owners of pit bull and pit bull-type dogs over the age of 4 months to have their dogs spayed or neutered. Additionally all such dogs used for breeding and housed in a licensed dog kennel will be required to be licensed.

State law (California Health and Safety Code Sections 122330-122331) prohibits any breed of dog from being deemed potentially dangerous or vicious. However, the law allows local agencies to enact breed-specific programs for spaying and neutering to control over-population.

“Our ultimate goal is to make San Bernardino County a safe community for residents and their pets. This ordinance goes as far as state law will allow us to go in addressing an issue that is clearly of great concern to the public,” said Third District Supervisor Neil Derry, who also worked with Animal Care & Control to create the ordinance and is co-sponsoring it with Supervisor Mitzelfelt.

Pit bull-type dogs represent about 20 percent of all dogs admitted to county animal shelters. They are one of the top three breeds impounded at county shelters and are the number one breed to be euthanized.

“The objective is to decrease the number of pit bull and pit bull-type dogs running at large in the community, and reduce impounds and euthanasia of this breed while decreasing costs to tax payers,” said Brian Cronin, division chief for Animal Care and Control, a division of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health.

Pit bull owners will be required to spay or neuter their dogs within 30 days of implementation of the ordinance. Animal Care and Control will help pet owners comply with the ordinance by offering humane education and spay-neuter vouchers to those who are eligible.

For more information or to access San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control services call 1-800-472-5609, or visit the division’s website at www.sbcounty.gov/acc.

Seems fair to me; still, why not take it one-step further and make this the requirement for ALL dog breeds.
While the implementation of this new ordinance may have some impact on the overpopulation, the majority of dogs  in shelters were bred by those who didn’t care enough about their dog in the first place so why would they comply in the future.
