From My Google Alerts- September 8, 2010

A Japanese Akita attacked a 10-year old girl in Scotland. It was not the first time the dog had attacked as the owner of the dog had already been convicted once for failure to control the dog. The girl needed 100 stitches to close her wounds.
--------------------
A young girl and an animal control officer were nipped by a pit bull, although it is reported as an attack. That is hardly an attack; furthermore, the article goes on to state that the dog might have been possessive because it had a litter of puppies in the area. Neither the young girl nor the animal control officer needed medical attention. This article is hardly newsworthy; must have been a slow day.
------------------
A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for dragging a black and white pit bull behind their vehicle; the dog later died. A reward totaling $$$5000 is being offered by two different groups. Anyone with information is asked to call Clark County Sheriff's Department at (859) 744-4390.

A German shepherd attacked a man walking his granddaughter’s poodle; it knocked him to the ground. Then the GS mauled the poodle. It fled the scene with a second dog that had short, white hair.
----------------
In DeFuniak Springs, Florida, a Red Heeler Australian cattle dog was attacked by a bear, resulting in over 50 puncture wounds. Attacks on pets are very rare and the Florida Fish and Wildlife agency urges everyone to take precautions to prevent any more attacks.

From My Google Alerts- September 1, 2010

In Lubbock, Texas, a woman was bitten by a dog last Monday. This is not news and I feel it is the stupidest article I have read this week as no information is given; however, I wanted to include it in these alerts so you can click the link and see for yourself how stupid it is. Who wastes their space with crap like this?
-------------
In Detroit, Michigan, police accidentally shot an animal control officer Thursday afternoon during a raid at a home on the city's east side. Authorities were trying to locate several pit bulls; a police officer tried to shoot one of the dogs when a bullet struck the animal control officer. The AC officer is stable. I have no idea what kind of raid it was and why the dogs were loose. Articles like this aggravate me because they give no information and rarely follow up.
-------------------
Sarge, the German shepherd that survived six gunshots to the head has bitten another person. This incident will get Sarge quarantined for 10 days, which is protocol for dog bites. This will further delay Sarge’s trip to a Utah animal sanctuary where he was offered a home.
-------------------
In McKeesport, a police dog bit a mother, her daughter, and the K9’s handler. The 6-yr-old missed her bus and an officer offered to drive her to school. The mother opened the door to the police car after which the dog lunged and bit her hand; additionally, the daughter was bitten on the side and the officer on the hand.
-------------------
This is an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the largest dog-fighting bust in history. I am not sure how I feel about how the officers went about making the bust considering they posed as dog fighters. Definitely a good read, although I do not recommend it if you are overly emotional about dogs because it gets somewhat graphic about what went on during the investigation.
---------------
Some idiot faces felony charges now that he has allegedly ordered his pit bull to attack a police officer. Tyler Ruiz, 21, was taken into custody following a disturbance at a residence in Butte. Ruiz reportedly ran at an officer that entered the premises; another officer tackled him and Ruiz then allegedly ordered his pit bull to attack the officer. When the officer pointed a Taser at the pit bull, the dog let go of the officer's pant leg. The officer was unharmed. I hope this dog is not put down for the actions of some negligent and oh so ignorant kid.

3rd Pit Bull Captured Following Attack - News Story - WSB Atlanta

3rd Pit Bull Captured Following Attack
Posted: 8:08 am EDT July 8, 2010Updated: 5:57 pm EDT July 9, 2010
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -- The third pit pull involved in an attack on a Douglasville woman has been captured, animal control officials said.
"The third pit bull has been quarantined. The dog was positively identified as one of the attacking dogs by Mr. Stephens, one of the neighbors who aided the victim during the attack," officials said.
Frankie Forsh, 56, said she tried to protect herself during the July 5 attack, but it wasn't enough to ward off the dogs.
“I had a stick in my hand and when they started approaching me, I hit one with the stick and then they all started jumping me,” said Forsh.
The dogs' owner, Akmad Rahim Coleman, was cited for 20 violations after his three pit bulls attacked Forsh as she walked in the neighborhood Monday morning, officials said.
Coleman was cited for improper restraint, canines attacking a human being without provocation and several counts of failing to provide adequate shelter and water.
Forsh said she fell to her knees and the dogs ripped into her face, arms, legs and feet.
“I don’t even know how many stitches I have. I don’t even know how many puncture wounds. I’m probably still in shock, it’s so surreal,” said Forsh.
Neighbors who came to her rescue were finally able to beat the dogs off of her. She was then rushed to an area hospital.
Authorities told the Forsh family that the owner of the dog's was out of town at the time of the attack, but has since returned home.
“He left his dogs in the caretaker’s charge, but he is also responsible because they are his dogs,” said Forsh.
Forsh, who may have to undergo rabies treatments, said she is hoping for stricter laws for vicious dogs.
___________________________________________________
This is a prime example of owner irresponsibility overshadowing responsible ownership. The owner of the dogs was given 20 citations, which is roughly between $5000 and $7000 in fines. I have no sympathy for the owner. He should have taken the necessary steps in finding someone responsible enough to take care of the dogs if he was going out of town. I don’t trust anyone else with my dog, which is why I rarely leave town. I hope this doesn’t start some BSL BS in Douglas County. I live about 40 minutes from there and if stuff is drudged up there, I fear I will feel the ramifications too. The victim wants stricter laws for vicious dogs; however, I think stricter laws for reckless owners would be a more apposite solution.
The owner was cited with improper restraint, canines attacking a human being without provocation and several counts of failing to provide adequate shelter and water. Now, I went back and read the article again and it doesn’t seem as though the dogs attacked the woman first. It seems they didn’t start attacking her until she hit one with a stick after they approached her.
“I had a stick in my hand and when they started approaching me, I hit one with the stick and then they all started jumping me,” said Forsh.
I’m sure it was a little alarming having the dogs approach her, but I think people need more awareness about what to do when approached by a strange dog. I have encountered quite a few unleashed dogs over the years and I have never had problems with any of them. So many people unnecessarily freak out and try to run or act crazy when they encounter a strange dog, especially a pit bull; yet, those actions are usually what cause a dog to attack. I am not making excuses for the dogs’ actions in any way but I don’t think that hitting them with a stick made the circumstances any better. In fact, I bet it exacerbated it. The dogs might have just checked her out and left or wanted to be petted. The dogs should be euthanized for human aggression; however, I am going to have to disagree that the dogs attacked without provocation.

PIT BULL IN DESPERATE NEED OF THE POWER OF THE PAW

A blog I recently received in my Google alerts caught my eye and I was horrified by what I saw. A pit bull was found in a mall parking lot and had been horridly abused. She lost her left eye, covered in sores and wounds, and was hairless. Her teeth had also been filed down or extracted it was later discovered.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share this story with everyone and anyone you know. Share it on your blog, Facebook, MySpace, Email, or any other social networking tool you use. This dog is in desperate need of care and two women named Sarah and Sandra have become her angels. No animal should ever have to go through what this sweet girl has endured.
Sandra and Sarah say she is so gentle and sweet. If all you do is share her story you will be doing this sweetheart a great service.  Her name is Shelby and she has been given a second chance... The WD and I are rooting for you precious girl. The following posts are from the blog "Mona and Mommy Too." It is a blog for a Dachshund named Mona written with the help of her mommy.

WARNING!!

This post contains horrible pictures of a injured pit bull. Please do not read any further if you are faint at heart.
Dearest friends,

Mommy is doing this post at the request of The Houston Pettie Pack's Mom Sandra. Their computer is still down, but Mommy and Sandra have kept in contact with each other by phone. This afternoon, Sandra called me very upset. She found a female pit bull in the parking lot of a mall very badly hurt. It appears she as been in a fight and dumped there, probably by whoever was fighting her. She has hardly any hair and many puncture wounds and bites. Sandra is afraid she has lost an eye. Does the name Michael Vick, the monster, come to mind?

Their are 4 pits in Kissa Bulls pack plus 2 dachshunds and we all know the kind of people they have for their parents. Kindness, loving, compassionate are just a few words to describe them. Sandra does not want to call the pound or SPCA, for obvious reasons. We know their are rescue groups but for now Sandra is trying to save her, since she has a lot of knowledge and experience with pits and a lot of medicine on hand is going to try.

If anyone knows anybody that could help take care of this poor girl it would be greatly appreciated. Of course she will need lots of prayers and THE POWER OF THE PAW to survive.
Please spread the word around the blogging world about this poor little one. Maybe their are some other pit bull bloggers in the Houston area that could help us take care of her.

God bless........Sarah
PS.....If anyone would like to contact Sandra or myself, please e-mail me at the address on Mona's bio page and I will send you her telephone #

UPDATE--INJURED PIT BULL

I want to thank everybody for the prayers and concern for the injured pit that Sandra found Saturday. I went there this morning and her injuries are far worse than the pictures showed.

Sandra's Vet is closed today because of the extended holiday. I called my Vet and I made an appointment, 4 pm was all he had open. Neither of us gets paid until this Friday but this can't wait so I will pay for her treatment with one of my credit cards.

We both think she was used as bait to train fighting bull dogs, has had pups at some time, appears to have been burned and one eye is sunken in. She is able walk, very gentle and we think she knows finally someone is trying to help her. God only knows all the pain and torture this poor girl has been through.

Sandra has done a marvelous job caring for Shelby. Yes her, name is Shelby.
I asked Sandra, what she wanted to call her, since my doctor needed a name. She didn't have one in mind so I named her Shelby.

I will do a post after we come from then Vet.
Please keep the Power of the Paw going because Shelby will need a miracle.
Go9od Bless............Sarah

UPDATE ON SHELBY'S VET VISIT

Sandra & I took Shelby to Mona's Vet this afternoon. There was some good news but lots of bad news. First off she got a complete physical and I had Dr Briles give her all the shots that any other dog would be given at a yearly exam.
The good news is that the fecal exam was negative and he doesn't think she has mange based on what he saw when he did the skin scraping test but Sandra bathed her with medicated shampoo a couple of times and the mites might have been washed away so he will recheck again in two weeks. He doesn't think she was burned but the reason she looks so bad is because of bacteria and the hundred of bites & puncture wounds. He gave Sandra an antibiotic to give her twice a day for two weeks, called Baytril and a dip to give her today and another dip in a week, called Mitaban. That should help with the itching. He said he has seen dogs in worst shape than Shelby do really well with antibiotics. "My God! How could this sweet baby look any worse."
As we were getting Shelby out of my SUV, we discovered something we hadn't noticed before. Most of her teeth had either been pulled or sawed down. The doctor agrees with us.....you don't take the teeth out of a fighting dog but you do, if you plan on using the dog as bait. We can't prove it but we all feel that she was bred continuously until she wasn't useful anymore and then used as bait.
She is heart worm positive and will need to be treated for that. One of her eyes is useless and will either have to be removed or stitched shut. She will need to be spayed. There is a possibility she could be pregnant but we pray not. When she goes back, he will do bloodwork, etc.
For now he doesn't want to give her any steroid treatments until we see what happens with the antibiotics, the dips, complete bed rest and isolation from all the other dogs. He did give her a shot for pain today. On July 17, we take her back and he will redo the skin scarping to verify there is no mange & decide what happens next.
He said it is to dangerous to start her on heart worm treatment until we are sure she doesn't have mange. When the time is right we will have her spayed and the heartworm treatments started.
Sandra took Shelby home to care for her and she is in the best of hands, far better than mine.
I paid 251.00 for Shelby's visit & medications today. Dr Briles reduced her bill from 284.50 to 251.00. "God Bless him. He is a big believer in rescue and gives reduced rates to anybody helping rescue a dog, cat, etc....it doesn't matter what."
I hope that I have remembered everything but sometimes, when I get so upset, I tend to forget details. There were a lot of tears shed today but when Dr Briles said he thinks she could be saved our hearts leaped for joy.
There has already been many of you who have offered to help with her medical expenses and we can't thank you all enough. If you would like to help please e-mail me the the address on Mona's bio and I can send you our addresses. Please keep the prayers coming.
Before I close, I would like to share one thing. When I first posted about Shelby, I posted a picture, as I usually do, of an unknown flower with a lizard on it that Judy had sent me from her yard. I thought it was just a bunch of rather common berries but since Judy sent it why not use it. This morning, when I saw Shelby in the flesh for the first time I was horrified. I cried and thought to myself, the doctor won't be able to help her and she would have to be put down. When I came home for a few hours before her appointment, I found the picture at the top of this blog that Judy sent this morning. The same flower but with a beautiful bloom. Shelby will be like that, of that I am sure, given time and with the Power of the Paw on her side. If we do lose her, we will have tried.
God Bless..........Sarah & Sandra

SHELBY'S FUND AND PLEASE LORD, NO MORE RAIN

Good morning,

I am doing a very fast post before I leave for work, if I can get out of the driveway hat is, to thank everyone for the out poring
of love and support for Shelby. I will be seeing Shelby again on Saturday and will have an update on how she is doing and hopefully take some picture where she is looking better. Sandra said yesterday that Shelby is so sweet and gives her no trouble at all but she doesn't want to be alone, so Sandra has made a bed that she can sleep on next to Shelby's cage.

Several of you have suggested we setup a Pay Pal account for donations to what I have started calling "The Shelby Fund." I will talk to Sandra about doing that on Saturday and will let you know. Again thanks so much for helping support our girl and keep the prayers coming...........Sarah, Mona's Mom

From My Google Alerts- July 3, 2010

A nine-year-old girl was bitten by a state trooper’s mastiff- pit bull mix while walking to the park with her friends. She was visiting her grandparent’s house in Brockton, MA. What really irks me is that the dog was unrestrained on the owner’s front yard. You’re a state trooper for crying aloud, you should know better than most about unrestrained dogs! Geez…. I bet he wasn’t even cited for failure to restrain dog on owner’s property. The girl needed 25 stitches to sew up her leg. The dog will be quarantined for 10 days and then euthanized.

DOG ATTACK: Police shot and wounded a dog after it attacked a woman in the 2700 block of Monroe Avenue at 4:10 p.m. Friday. Police said they found a 40-year-old woman being bit and pinned against a house by the dog. Officers attempted to Taser the dog, but the animal continued to attack. The dog was then shot once and wounded, which allowed the victim to escape. The woman was not seriously injured and the dog was taken for treatment by a veterinarian. There is no mention of breed or of how the attack began. The incident occurred in Niagra Falls.

A mother and daughter allegedly ordered their pit bull to attack a man. They are drug addicts and the man was their supplier. They are low-rent junkies who don’t deserve to own a pit bull; I also feel sorry for the dog having been in their care. Lock them up and make an example out of these idiots. I just hope they don’t euthanize the dog because of its owner’s actions. There is no mention of past aggression or that the dog did serious damage. I am not excusing a biting pit bull but who knows what the two women were doing to try to make the dog attack. At the very least, he should be evaluated to see if he is sound.

A woman and her daughter called police and reported that a pit bull was being a nuisance. Why the woman called the POLICE instead of ANIMAL CONTROL, I have no idea. While I have issues with some AC officers’ actions, I do believe they are better equipped to handle animals than the police are. Apparently, the woman called 911, but I would think 911 would send AC. I guess not. Anyway, the officer said the female pit bull was wagging her tail and very friendly, standing right next to him. So the officer grabbed her collar and instructed the mother and daughter to get down; the dog then became agitated and started thrashing around. I’m sure the dog felt threatened and didn’t like being grabbed by her collar, which is why AC would probably have been a better choice to restrain the dog. The dog bit the officer and he shot it three times, killing her instantly. PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE OWNER AND LEASH YOUR DOG, NO MATTER THE BREED, AT ALL TIMES. NEVER ALLOW YOUR DOG TO ROAM FREE!

The Golden Gate Park dogs that bit a man and a woman have still not been claimed by anyone. The dogs were found wearing harnesses though. They will become department property if not claimed within 5 days, meaning they will probably be euthanized.

Danish dog breed law takes first innocent victim - a Boerboel

Pet News 101: Danish dog breed law takes first innocent victim - a Boerboel

July 2, 2:25 PM · Libbii Armstrong-Brown - Salt Lake City Pet Products Examiner
Commencing on 1 July 2010, new breed ban laws were set in place in Denmark. Denmark's new Dog Act bans the following 13 breeds, although dogs said to be pit bull terriers and Tosas were banned in 1991:
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Central Asian Ovtcharka
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Caucasian Ovtcharka
  • Sarplaninac
  • South Russian Ovtcharka
  • Tornjak
  • Tosa (banned in 1991)
  • American Bulldog
  • Boerboel - South African Mastiff
  • Kangal
  • Pit bull terrier (banned in 1991)

Under Denmark's law, these dog breeds, as well as dogs that contain the genes of these breeds, are prohibited from being bred, purchased, sold, imported, exported or transferred in Denmark, though there is a long phase in period for breeders, up to June 30, 2015.

Those dogs that are banned dogs in Denmark as of July 1, 2010 may only stay during a phase-in period. However, they have to be kept on a short leash less than 7 feet long, and wear a closed muzzle when off their owner's property.

Interestingly, it lies on the owners to prove to authorities, upon request, that their dog is not one of the banned breeds or even a mix.
Anasha Boerboels, one of Denmark's most prestigious Boerboel breeding kennel, was forced to euthanize the first Boerboel victim of Denmark's cruel breed ban. The reason? Because she was a spayed female for which a home couldn't be found in time.
One of the owners of Anasha Boerboels made the following statement:
"The first Boerboel has to be put to sleep today because of the new dog laws that came into effect yesterday. In about an hour we will take her to the vets and she will be euthanized. She is neutered and therefore cannot be used for breeding, therefore she would have to be placed as a pet. This is now illegal in Denmark and therefore she has to pay the price.

We are a professional kennel, we have vet inspections and the vet noted that she was here. We are not allowed to own pet dogs, only breeding dogs. This is a rule that the tax authorities have enforced so that kennels have to account for all the dog food etc used in their kennel business."
'Denmark is moving in the opposite direction from other European Union countries that have discovered breed discrimination does not work to prevent or reduce dog bite incidents.
In fact, UK's Dangerous Dogs Act was declared a failure in 2007 when it was found that the numbers of dog bites had risen 10% in a year and 50% since 1998-1999. According to the BBC, hospitalizations due to dog bites increased by 25% after 'pit bulls' were banned in Britain.
It was also determined that the Act did not result in any decline in dog bite incidents with 73.9% before and 73.1% after enactment of the law.'
Breed ban laws have considerable, long term effects, as outlined in this article.
Last year Ogden proposed regulations against pit bulls; the same time that Orem was considering banning pit bulls; Springville has had regulations against the breed for years; South Jordan has banned them altogether, including Staffordshire Terriers.

But pit bulls are not the only dog breed being banned.
Did you know that North Salt Lake has banned Shar-Peis and Rottweilers?
Or that Smithfield has stated the following: Declared as vicious and require a special permit; Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Pit Bull, Husky, Alaskan malamute, Doberman Pinscher, and Wolf Hybird?
________________________
This article particularly saddened me because there was NO GOOD reason for this female dog to be euthanized, other than to satisfy a ridiculous law. She wasn’t aggressive and had no history of hurting anyone. She was spayed, which was her death sentence.
BSL is BS!
