On October 7 in Morton, MS, all breeds of dogs pertaining to the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, and the Wolf-dog hybrid will be banned. The breeds may not be owned, harbored, or kept within the city limits of Morton, Mayor Greg Butler said last week.

In Austria, a Bernese mountain dog bit off a chunk of its owner’s upper lip when she opened the car door. In a separate incident a seven-month-old boy received minor injuries after being bitten by his grandfather’s dog; no dog breed mentioned. Also in Austria, a 10-year-old girl was hospitalized after being mauled by a friend’s Landseer.
Lisa O’Neill, volunteer coordinator with Angels of Assisi, an animal rescue organization in Roanoke, said maggots had to be picked out of Trooper’s mouth, eyes, and sinus cavity. He was dehydrated and could barely stand up.
Part of the dog’s mouth had to be removed, he had a puncture wound in his eye, and he has a hole in his tongue, O’Neill said. When he arrived at Angels of Assisi, he was about 15 pounds underweight, she said.
A bulldog has mauled a five-year-old girl southwest of Brisbane. The dog is also described as a bullmastiff cross and it was not registered. She was bitten on her face and upper arm; her lip was torn as well in the incident. The family wants the dog euthanized. _______________________________ The owner of the two pit bulls that killed a Mountain Ranch man last month will be arraigned in court today on felony charges of knowingly having a mischievous animal, letting it be at large or keeping it without ordinary care, resulting in the death of a human being. Sheryl Sellers had left her two pit bulls in a fenced yard Aug. 22 when they escaped, attacked, and killed Jerry Yates, 69, while he was working on his property. Information has since surfaced chronicling a long history of aggressive and problematic dogs owned by Sellers. This story is rather disturbing as this woman was a documented irresponsible owner since 2005; the county failed to do anything about her roaming pit bulls for six years. That is iunacceptable. _____________________________ Jasmine Bailey, 19, was sentenced to jail for a probation violation after her three pit bulls attacked six-year-old Tyah Norris. Both Bailey and her boyfriend, Brian Nace, 35, were charged with keeping a dangerous animal that caused serious injury, a felony punishable by a maximum of four years in prison, 500 hours of community service, and a $2,000 fine. Pictures taken of her face after the attack are gruesome. The first police officer to come to her aid earlier testified he could not distinguish any of her facial features. The judge sentenced her to jail for being charged with a new felony while on probation and sentenced her to 333 days in jail for violating her probation. The judge said he gave Bailey the harshest possible jail sentence because she was charged with a new felony, and there was evidence presented or testimony given at a hearing Tuesday that she had been drinking. Drinking alcohol is not allowed while on probation. ___________________________
The Denver City Council on Monday delayed a vote on whether to create an exemption to the city's pit-bull-terrier ban that would allow the disabled to use the dogs as service animals. Council members sent the issue back to committee for further discussion, saying they feared the exemption would weaken the city's ban and make it virtually impossible to enforce. The issue is scheduled to come back before the full council Oct. 25 for a vote.

In Marion, Ohio, a 17-month-old child was bitten by a Black Lab; apparently, the dog runs lose frequently. The Health Department is seeking information about the dog. Anyone with information about the dog or its owner is asked to call the health department at 740-387-2875 or the dog warden at 740-386-6150. Interesting, but not surprising, that the title of the article says “Dog Bite Child, Owner Sought.” I am sure if the dog had been a pit bull the title would have been very nasty.
A pit bull was shot in the shoulder by police after its owner ordered the dog to attack the police officers. The police were called because Darlene Suzette Taylor allegedly struck her mother during an altercation. Taylor faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. The report says Taylor is also charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older for striking her mother, Jonell Lazerte, 79, who told officers Taylor threw her to the ground and struck her in the face during an argument before running out of the house.

A man could not find another home for his dog so he drugged it, suffocated it, and buried it in his backyard. The man now faces jail time for causing the animal’s death. Darron Goodwin will be sentenced for Bilbo’s, the dog, death on September 29.

A St. Petersburg police officer shot and killed two leashed dogs on Sunday night; an unleashed, blind Labrador retriever approached the two-leashed dogs and began fighting with one, a Chesapeake Bay retriever. Chris Clark, owner of one of the dogs he was walking, said the dogs' leashes were wrapped around his legs and caused him to fall down, so he grabbed them by the collars. "While I'm still sitting on the ground, I hear, 'Mad dog,' and I've got a gun right next to my head firing and shooting Missy, the Chesapeake retriever. Then he (the cop) comes over and shoots my dog in front of me," Clark said. By that point, the dogs were not fighting anymore and the other dog had moved away, Clark said. The dogs were shot four times, killing both of the leashed dogs. Was that necessary? I have no doubt that the fight could have been easily broken up soon enough. There was no need to shoot those two dogs; in addition, if any dog was going to be shot why not shoot the one that is not on a leash. The bottom line is the use of a gun was not necessary and this cop needs to be taken off duty. A Japanese Akita attacked a 10-year old girl in Scotland. It was not the first time the dog had attacked as the owner of the dog had already been convicted once for failure to control the dog. The girl needed 100 stitches to close her wounds.

A young girl and an animal control officer were nipped by a pit bull, although it is reported as an attack. That is hardly an attack; furthermore, the article goes on to state that the dog might have been possessive because it had a litter of puppies in the area. Neither the young girl nor the animal control officer needed medical attention. This article is hardly newsworthy; must have been a slow day.

In DeFuniak Springs, Florida, a Red Heeler Australian cattle dog was attacked by a bear, resulting in over 50 puncture wounds. Attacks on pets are very rare and the Florida Fish and Wildlife agency urges everyone to take precautions to prevent any more attacks.

Benson Jr., of the 900 block of Boggs Drive in Dover, was charged with attempted first-degree rape and four other offenses in the incident that happened about 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of N. West St. He attempted to rape an 18-year-old girl, but she was saved when her pit bull intervened and became aggressive toward the man. ______________

On August 4, a pit bull named Bootsie was beaten with a baseball bat outside of a home. Police said they found the dog barely breathing beneath blankets in the backyard, and a freshly dug grave nearby. Police reports indicated up to seven people were home at the time. Police at the scene said a 14-year-old admitted to the crime.

Last summer a man threw his pit bull named Oreo off a rooftop near Brooklyn. He was set to be sentenced August 30th. The case captured headlines last year around the city and region as animal-rights activists and dog-lovers cried out for the dog’s life to be spared. However, the young pit bull-mix named “Oreo,” who survived being thrown off the sixth-floor rooftop, was declared unfit to live because of her aggressive behavior, her caretakers said. She was euthanized in October 2009. RIP sweet Oreo.

Denver may have to revise its pit bull ban, as it does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Three people have sued the city saying the 20-year-old ban prevents them from using pit bulls as service dogs. The first look into changing the law will be in September.

A 5-year old boxer named Rocky fatally mauled a girl, age 4, while she played in the yard. Taylor was playing Wednesday in a yard near Iron Ridge where the 5-year-old boxer named Rocky was chained before it apparently freed itself and attacked. A sheriff says criminal charges seem unlikely in the death of a 4-year-old girl who was mauled to death by a family friend's dog.
A 7-year-old Detroit boy is recuperating after being mauled by a pit bull that broke loose and rushed a group of children in Warren. The child, Khalil Rocks, was rushed to St. John Hospital in Detroit, on Wednesday. He received numerous stitches to close severe bite wounds to his head, legs, and arms. The boy escaped injuries that are more serious and even death, according to witnesses, when a neighbor saw what was happening outside 8702 Maxwell, grabbed a flowerpot, and struck the dog in the head, forcing it to let go of the child. It is unknown if the children were harassing the dog; the dog will be euthanized after ten days in quarantine.

A pet-rescue organization is seeking a loving home for a puppy named Mason whose original owner allegedly crudely severed the dog’s ears with scissors. The 4-month old pit bull was taken in by Allegan County Animal Control’s shelter on Aug. 5 and then handed over to Saugatuck-area based Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance on Sunday, according to Jeff Stiegman, who serves on the board of Wishbone. The dog is in foster care while his ears heal but will eventually need a permanent home. Mason first came to Allegan County Animal Control’s attention when a Grand Junction-area resident called Child Protective Services on suspicion of child neglect in a home in the resident’s neighborhood. A toddler revealed that Mason’s ears had been cut. This little guy is so precious. I hope he finds his forever home as soon as he gets well!

A neighborhood prankster let another neighbor’s dogs out of their fenced yard, which ended with yet another neighbor’s pet being mauled and eventually put down. It isn't the first time a neighborhood prankster has been accused of causing trouble by intentionally letting the pit bull and other dogs out.

This is disgusting!! A 58-year-old Muskegon man was arraigned on charges he sexually assaulted his pit bull. Jose Antonio Sanchez, already on parole for a previous sexual assault in 1997, told his parole officer about the sexual encounter with the dog. The parole officer then notified the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office, which in turn charged Sanchez with the sexual assault. Sanchez could get up to 15 years in prison if found guilty. This guy is a total sicko. Argh….
A six- year old girl in Arkansas was attacked by a dog; she was sent to the ER with head injuries. A neighbor, Albert Albay, was alerted by an 11-year-old boy about the attack and he went and got a gun. He was able to separate the girl and the dog but the dog tried to attack him, which is when he shot the animal. The dog’s owner said it was a pit bull/boxer mix and he was a big playful dog. The dog was euthanized and sent off for rabies testing.

A postal worker in Houma was bitten by a dog that escaped its chain in an unfenced yard. The postal worker suffered severe injuries to both legs and the dog was turned over to AC; it will be euthanized after 10 days. The dog is said to be a pit bull, although no specific breed is named.

The man who was mauled to death by nine of his family’s dogs on July 15th died from the bites he received from the dogs, not a heart attack as suggested. The death of 30-year-old Mychael Wynters, who died June 15 after being bitten hundreds of times by as many as nine of the family’s dogs, has been ruled accidental by Lorain County Coroner Paul Matus. Wynters had an enlarged heart and his blood sugar was low, but authorities do not know if those medical conditions contributed to his death in the driveway of a home at 48385 state Route 511, the coroner said Saturday. One thing is sure, Matus said - Wynters did not die of a heart attack before being mauled as bystanders suggested. Matus said there was evidence of circulation before and after the mauling.
"The third pit bull has been quarantined. The dog was positively identified as one of the attacking dogs by Mr. Stephens, one of the neighbors who aided the victim during the attack," officials said.
Frankie Forsh, 56, said she tried to protect herself during the July 5 attack, but it wasn't enough to ward off the dogs.
“I had a stick in my hand and when they started approaching me, I hit one with the stick and then they all started jumping me,” said Forsh.
The dogs' owner, Akmad Rahim Coleman, was cited for 20 violations after his three pit bulls attacked Forsh as she walked in the neighborhood Monday morning, officials said.
Coleman was cited for improper restraint, canines attacking a human being without provocation and several counts of failing to provide adequate shelter and water.
Forsh said she fell to her knees and the dogs ripped into her face, arms, legs and feet.
“I don’t even know how many stitches I have. I don’t even know how many puncture wounds. I’m probably still in shock, it’s so surreal,” said Forsh.
Neighbors who came to her rescue were finally able to beat the dogs off of her. She was then rushed to an area hospital.
Authorities told the Forsh family that the owner of the dog's was out of town at the time of the attack, but has since returned home.
“He left his dogs in the caretaker’s charge, but he is also responsible because they are his dogs,” said Forsh.
Forsh, who may have to undergo rabies treatments, said she is hoping for stricter laws for vicious dogs.
This is a prime example of owner irresponsibility overshadowing responsible ownership. The owner of the dogs was given 20 citations, which is roughly between $5000 and $7000 in fines. I have no sympathy for the owner. He should have taken the necessary steps in finding someone responsible enough to take care of the dogs if he was going out of town. I don’t trust anyone else with my dog, which is why I rarely leave town. I hope this doesn’t start some BSL BS in Douglas County. I live about 40 minutes from there and if stuff is drudged up there, I fear I will feel the ramifications too. The victim wants stricter laws for vicious dogs; however, I think stricter laws for reckless owners would be a more apposite solution.

I’m sure it was a little alarming having the dogs approach her, but I think people need more awareness about what to do when approached by a strange dog. I have encountered quite a few unleashed dogs over the years and I have never had problems with any of them. So many people unnecessarily freak out and try to run or act crazy when they encounter a strange dog, especially a pit bull; yet, those actions are usually what cause a dog to attack. I am not making excuses for the dogs’ actions in any way but I don’t think that hitting them with a stick made the circumstances any better. In fact, I bet it exacerbated it. The dogs might have just checked her out and left or wanted to be petted. The dogs should be euthanized for human aggression; however, I am going to have to disagree that the dogs attacked without provocation.
A 12-year old boy killed two of the three Chihuahuas owned by his foster father in Atwater, California. He was taken to juvenile hall. Apparently, the dogs tried to bite the boy so he tossed two in a small irrigation pipe, drowning them by throwing a cement block on top of them. The third washed into a canal from a larger irrigation pipe and survived. He is a sick kid and this is a precursor to something for atrocious.

In Jacksonville, Florida, a woman is being held prisoner in her own home by stray dogs. She claims one of the dogs is a pit bull and it killed a dog across the street from her; yet, AC wouldn’t remove the dog’s body because they were called by police. Evidently, AC is understaffed and stray dogs killing others aren’t priority. Once someone is bitten or killed then AC can respond as a priority call. The strays are too fast to catch so AC says they will have to set up a trap on someone’s property, but that will take the owner’s permission and cooperation. It sounds to me like Animal Control doesn’t really give a shit.
