Pups' Ears Clipped To Aid In Fighting

Pups' Ears Clipped To Aid In Fighting

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Police are searching for two men who are accused of selling pit bull puppies that were horribly mutilated.
“The city is looking for two Hispanic men, shaved heads, seen hanging around 98th Street and Sage Road Southwest selling pit bull puppies. All these pit bulls have their ears bobbed out, cut off roughly,” Animal Welfare Marketing Manager Rick DeReyes said.
Reyna is just a 2-month-old pup. When she arrived at Albuquerque Animal Welfare, she was in extreme pain because her ears were cut off. In addition to being painful, clipping a dog’s ears can jeopardize their health.
“They can get infections. They can die from it. This is a 2-month-old puppy. This puppy was in extreme pain. It's very, very serious,” DeReyes said.
Unfortunately, the mutilation that these puppies have suffered is not unique. Pit bull’s ears are usually cut off for a fighting.
“The reason they tend to chop off the ears is for pit bull fighting. The ears are too small to grab on to, for a dog to latch on to. That’s why you see a lot of pit bulls with their ears chopped off for fighting,” DeReyes said.
At this point, officials just want to find the other mutilated dogs that the men were selling, so they can care for them medically.
“We need to find these people to stop them from doing it and put an end to the cruelty that they perpetrated,” DeReyes said.
If you have any information about this case, call 311.

While I find this so very sad that these pups did not have their ears cropped surgically, the inaccuracy of this news article irritates me as well. Dog men did not crop their fighting dogs’ ears because it was not practical. Cropping the ears left too much of the inside exposed which could prove fatal in combat (Joseph Colby). I think the media should do their research so they don’t continue to lead people to believe that bait dogs and cropped ears were used in dog fighting.
As for the puppies, I wish them well and hope they find their forever homes.

On October 7 in Morton, MS, all breeds of dogs pertaining to the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, and the Wolf-dog hybrid will be banned. The breeds may not be owned, harbored, or kept within the city limits of Morton, Mayor Greg Butler said last week.

In Austria, a Bernese mountain dog bit off a chunk of its owner’s upper lip when she opened the car door. In a separate incident a seven-month-old boy received minor injuries after being bitten by his grandfather’s dog; no dog breed mentioned. Also in Austria, a 10-year-old girl was hospitalized after being mauled by a friend’s Landseer.

A pit bull named Trooper was attacked by other dogs and found with bite marks and abrasions to his face, legs, and chest. He is recovering at a foster home after undergoing procedures for bite wounds and abrasions on its legs, face, and chest. The dog was first treated at Angels of Assisi and sent to Vinton Veterinary Hospital.
Lisa O’Neill, volunteer coordinator with Angels of Assisi, an animal rescue organization in Roanoke, said maggots had to be picked out of Trooper’s mouth, eyes, and sinus cavity. He was dehydrated and could barely stand up.
Part of the dog’s mouth had to be removed, he had a puncture wound in his eye, and he has a hole in his tongue, O’Neill said. When he arrived at Angels of Assisi, he was about 15 pounds underweight, she said.

The two northwest New Mexico men accused of decapitating a dog with chain saw appeared in court Thursday. Both 32-year-old Teddy Sexton and 31-year-old Corey Bowen are facing fourth-degree felony extreme cruelty to animals after they allegedly used a chain saw to kill a 2-year-old pit bull named Thor because it bit a child. San Juan County Sheriff’s Lt. Dwayne Faverino says Sexton and Bowen attempted to cut the dog's throat, but were having difficulty and grabbed the chain saw. Prosecutors say the issue is the method used in putting the dog down and I totally agree. Yes, the dog should have been put down for biting 2 children; however, there are more humane, effective ways to do so.

In August of 2010, a pit bull named Bootsie was beaten so severely with baseball bats that it had to be put down. The dog was found in a yard of a home by police and he was barely breathing; a freshly dug grave was being dug by a 40-year old man and a 14-year old boy. Gerald McKinley, 40, has been charged with mutilating an animal, a Class D felony, and animal cruelty, a Class A misdemeanor as of October 5, 2010. RIP sweet Bootsie! You deserved so much better.

A pit bull was left out in the rain, in a crate, for several days in Stratford, Connecticut. Police responded to a citizen complaint that a dog had been left in the rain in the backyard of a McGrath Court residence for three or four days. When police arrived at the residence, the dog was shaking, sitting in a puddle that had formed inside a crate, police said. His reasoning for doing what he did:
"The dog has fleas and we have an infant in the house."
This idiot has no business owning a dog period. This type of crap really freakin burns me. Argh………..

A Japanese Akita attacked a 10-year old girl in Scotland. It was not the first time the dog had attacked as the owner of the dog had already been convicted once for failure to control the dog. The girl needed 100 stitches to close her wounds.

A young girl and an animal control officer were nipped by a pit bull, although it is reported as an attack. That is hardly an attack; furthermore, the article goes on to state that the dog might have been possessive because it had a litter of puppies in the area. Neither the young girl nor the animal control officer needed medical attention. This article is hardly newsworthy; must have been a slow day.

A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for dragging a black and white pit bull behind their vehicle; the dog later died. A reward totaling $$$5000 is being offered by two different groups. Anyone with information is asked to call Clark County Sheriff's Department at (859) 744-4390.

In DeFuniak Springs, Florida, a Red Heeler Australian cattle dog was attacked by a bear, resulting in over 50 puncture wounds. Attacks on pets are very rare and the Florida Fish and Wildlife agency urges everyone to take precautions to prevent any more attacks.

An American Staffordshire terrier was adopted by Bob and Maryellen Chanda last week. I love it when I see older people adopting pit bull type dogs. It shows that they aren’t ignorant nor do they believe what the media tells them. Kangol and I wish the best of luck to the Chandas and their new family member, Maggie.

In Lubbock, Texas, a dog has escaped from its backyard and the family is seeking help from the public in finding the dog. The black and brown Belgian Malinois got loose at about 8:30 a.m. today from the backyard on 57th Street between Indiana and University avenues. He goes by the name Rex and looks similar to a German shepherd. The dog was a military dog who served in Iraq and Afghanistan before being discharged for medical reasons. A local marine got to adopt Rex out of the military. I hope you are found safely and soon, Rex!

Samuel Van Donslear, 19-months old, was attacked by a dog when he wandered into a neighboring yard. The investigation has been closed and nobody will be charged. The investigation declared that no one involved in the incident is guilty of any criminal activity. The dog has been declared vicious and its owners were issued a citation. So why will nobody be charged? Hmmm… I’m going to go out on a limb here and say nobody will be charged because said dog is not a pit bull. Media bias at its brightest. Look at all headlines that appeared when I Googled the boy’s name.

The California state Assembly voted on SB 250 (Florez) tonight, but after multiple attempts, it did not receive a sufficient number of votes to pass.
The final vote – at 11:47 pm — was 28 27 Yes, 40 39 No, 10 12 abstain.   41 Yes votes were required for SB 250 to pass.
SB 250 – mandatory spay-neuter for dogs and cats – is finally and truly defeated.

Lubbock, Texas also vetoed a bill requiring mandatory spay/neutering of animals. While I am pro spay/neuter, laws such as mandatory spay/neuter takes away the rights of a responsible owner by letting the decision be his or her own. Many responsible owners don’t spay/neuter their animals and never have any issues. Show dogs are not allowed to be altered and if this bill had become law that would affect thousands of dogs and their owners. Phil Marshall said, “Irresponsible pet owners already ignored existing laws that attempted to keep strays off the streets. What makes us think if we pass stricter laws, they’ll obey them?”

A dog, a black and white pit bull, was dragged behind a truck in the parking lot of an elementary school; it was left for dead. The dog was discovered September 3, 2010 by Beth Bowman. She says, “The pit bull was literally skinned alive, his paws were burned off by the road, his bones broken.” He was taken to the animal shelter and still had the chain around his neck; however, he couldn’t be saved. Police are looking for whoever committed this atrocious act and they are asking for the public’s help. If you hear anyone bragging about the incident or have any information, you are urged to give them a call. The number is 859-745-7400.

James B. Benson Jr., of the 900 block of Boggs Drive in Dover, was charged with attempted first-degree rape and four other offenses in the incident that happened about 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of N. West St. He attempted to rape an 18-year-old girl, but she was saved when her pit bull intervened and became aggressive toward the man. ______________

On August 4, a pit bull named Bootsie was beaten with a baseball bat outside of a home. Police said they found the dog barely breathing beneath blankets in the backyard, and a freshly dug grave nearby. Police reports indicated up to seven people were home at the time. Police at the scene said a 14-year-old admitted to the crime.

Last summer a man threw his pit bull named Oreo off a rooftop near Brooklyn. He was set to be sentenced August 30th. The case captured headlines last year around the city and region as animal-rights activists and dog-lovers cried out for the dog’s life to be spared. However, the young pit bull-mix named “Oreo,” who survived being thrown off the sixth-floor rooftop, was declared unfit to live because of her aggressive behavior, her caretakers said. She was euthanized in October 2009. RIP sweet Oreo.

Denver may have to revise its pit bull ban, as it does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Three people have sued the city saying the 20-year-old ban prevents them from using pit bulls as service dogs. The first look into changing the law will be in September.

A 5-year old boxer named Rocky fatally mauled a girl, age 4, while she played in the yard. Taylor was playing Wednesday in a yard near Iron Ridge where the 5-year-old boxer named Rocky was chained before it apparently freed itself and attacked. A sheriff says criminal charges seem unlikely in the death of a 4-year-old girl who was mauled to death by a family friend's dog.

Pit Bull Turns into Internet Sensation

Pit Bull Turns into Internet Sensation

YouTube Video Of 'Dolly' Viewed By Thousands

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- A pit bull in Seminole County just may be the next Internet sensation.
Dolly was a stray when she came in to Seminole County Animal Control back in 2009.
She was adopted out, but when she was turned back in earlier this year, she didn't look the same.
Dolly was scratched, bloody, and cut in several spots, animal control officials said.
The owner said she was starting fights with his other dogs, but animal control has a different theory.
They think Dolly was used as possibly a "bait dog" in a dogfighting operation.
Now Dolly's healed and Erica Daniel, the shelter worker who intended to foster her, has decided to keep her.

"I want people to understand what goes on with these dogs. I want people to understand how important it is to adopt shelter dogs," Daniel said.
Daniel has made Dolly's success story into a YouTube video that has already been viewed by thousands.

OMG! Such a sad story with a wonderful, happy ending. This beautiful girl has captured my heart! I am so glad she found her forever home. She deserves the life she has been given, surrounded by a loving family. This video had me bawling like a baby. Dolly is a positive representative on pit bull type dogs everywhere, able to overcome the cruelties that she suffered at the hands of man and become a breed ambassador. I am so happy you found your forever home, Dolly!!
