A bulldog has mauled a five-year-old girl southwest of Brisbane. The dog is also described as a bullmastiff cross and it was not registered. She was bitten on her face and upper arm; her lip was torn as well in the incident. The family wants the dog euthanized.

The owner of the two pit bulls that killed a Mountain Ranch man last month will be arraigned in court today on felony charges of knowingly having a mischievous animal, letting it be at large or keeping it without ordinary care, resulting in the death of a human being. Sheryl Sellers had left her two pit bulls in a fenced yard Aug. 22 when they escaped, attacked, and killed Jerry Yates, 69, while he was working on his property. Information has since surfaced chronicling a long history of aggressive and problematic dogs owned by Sellers. This story is rather disturbing as this woman was a documented irresponsible owner since 2005; the county failed to do anything about her roaming pit bulls for six years. That is iunacceptable.

Jasmine Bailey, 19, was sentenced to jail for a probation violation after her three pit bulls attacked six-year-old Tyah Norris. Both Bailey and her boyfriend, Brian Nace, 35, were charged with keeping a dangerous animal that caused serious injury, a felony punishable by a maximum of four years in prison, 500 hours of community service, and a $2,000 fine. Pictures taken of her face after the attack are gruesome. The first police officer to come to her aid earlier testified he could not distinguish any of her facial features. The judge sentenced her to jail for being charged with a new felony while on probation and sentenced her to 333 days in jail for violating her probation. The judge said he gave Bailey the harshest possible jail sentence because she was charged with a new felony, and there was evidence presented or testimony given at a hearing Tuesday that she had been drinking. Drinking alcohol is not allowed while on probation.

The Denver City Council on Monday delayed a vote on whether to create an exemption to the city's pit-bull-terrier ban that would allow the disabled to use the dogs as service animals. Council members sent the issue back to committee for further discussion, saying they feared the exemption would weaken the city's ban and make it virtually impossible to enforce. The issue is scheduled to come back before the full council Oct. 25 for a vote.

In Marion, Ohio, a 17-month-old child was bitten by a Black Lab; apparently, the dog runs lose frequently. The Health Department is seeking information about the dog. Anyone with information about the dog or its owner is asked to call the health department at 740-387-2875 or the dog warden at 740-386-6150. Interesting, but not surprising, that the title of the article says “Dog Bite Child, Owner Sought.” I am sure if the dog had been a pit bull the title would have been very nasty.

Death row 'pit bull' won't be killed after all

Death row 'pit bull' won't be killed after all
July 7, 9:13 AM · Anita Robeson - Toronto Animal Rights Examiner
Last month, Princess, identified as a "pit bull" by Hamilton Animal Control, escaped from her home and, allegedly, "attacked" a smaller terrier.

Princess was then ordered to be killed---not because she was involved in an altercation with another dog---but because a vet at the pound estimated her to be three to four years of age, automatically making her an "illegal pit bull" under the breed-specific sections of the Dog Owners' Liability Act (DOLA).

When Ontario's "pit bull ban" took effect on August 29, 2005, all dogs born before, or within 90 days of, that date were allowed to live as "restricted pit bulls." But all "pit-bull-type" dogs born after the 90-day window are deemed to be "illegal" and are to be destroyed or shipped out of province.

Upon hearing of Princess's fate, lawyer and animal advocate Jaime Stephenson informed Animal Control she intended to bring an application before a Hamilton court for a stay of execution. Supervisor Jim Gillis then agreed to postpone killing Princess, pending an investigation into the dog's background.

Stephenson also offered to pay to have Princess spayed and sent to an out-of-province animal rescue group.

Not an "Illegal Pit Bull"
The city's investigation revealed that Princess was, in fact, licensed in 2005 and is not an "illegal pit bull" under the law.

This, of course, reveals how insane the "pit bull ban" actually is. Once a dog is seized and labeled an "illegal pit bull" by an animal control officer and/or an animal services vet, it will be killed---unless the dog's owner (or the owner's lawyer) steps in to fight for the dog's life and can prove the dog is not an "illegal pit bull."

Although it was proven that Princess is not an "illegal pit bull," she is, nevertheless, considered to be a "restricted pit bull" who escaped from her yard and injured another dog. As such, she will not be allowed to return home.

Stephenson, who describes Princess as "relaxed and friendly," will pay the $15 a day to board her at the pound until she can find an out-of-province rescue organization willing to take the dog.

"It's unfortunate that we don't hear about these situations more often because these animals are being put down in this province every day," Stephenson told the Hamilton Spectator.

StopK9Profiling is a Toronto-based animal advocacy group fighting to end Ontario's breed-specific legislation (BSL).

A fundraiser called Bands Against BSL will take place this Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the el Mocambo on Spadina Ave. in Toronto.

Turkey Aims to Seize Every Pit Bull in the Country | Animals | Change.org

Tell Turkey: Stop Targeting Pit Bulls

Targeting: Besir Atalay (Interior Minister of Turkey)
Started by: Change.org
On June 27, 2010, the Turkish government decided to start rounding up pit bull type dogs and charging citizens who own these dogs fines of over 3,400 Turkish lira (over $2,000 USD).
The dogs will be taken from their homes and impounded. Since no shelter in the country has room for these dogs and it is illegal to own them, this means certain death for the estimated 10,000 pit bull type dogs in the country.
The government has ordered vets offices to turn in any clients with pit bull type dogs, proving that this law is targeting responsible dog owners, not the dog fighters and Turkish mafia who are the real problem. Breed bans don't work. Less than a year ago, Italy overturned their breed specific legislation because it was costly and ineffective.
Turkey needs to revise their law so it targets irresponsible dog owners, not innocent people and innocent dogs. Tell Turkey to stop killing pit bulls.
(Thanks to Jill Lee and Gulsebnem Bishop for drawing attention to this issue!)

Stop Targeting Pit Bulls

Greetings,
I am writing to urge you to stop rounding up "pit bull type" dogs in Turkey. Policies that are based on breed of dog rather than an individual dog's behavior only end up harming innocent people and innocent dogs.

A dog should not be condemned for the way he looks. Breed bans do not stop dog fighting or irresponsible owners from endangering citizens. The only way to reduce dog bites and dog-related crimes are through education and non-breed specific policies.

Many other countries, such as Italy, have found that breed bans are costly and ineffective and they've replaced their outdated breed-based laws. I urge you to do the same. Please stop killing pit bull type dogs and revise the law so that dangerous dogs - not arbitrary breeds - are targeted.

This is very disheartening! I would be high tailing it out of Turkey. I think your “bite problem” might improve if you were to take this law and replace any word(s) relating to a pit bull with “irresponsible owner” Thugs and wimps who use pit bulls  for  intimidation  could probably care less about the no pit bull law. They will just seek a new breed to abuse and demonize, if they even acknowledge the law at all.
